Thailand has expanded the use of automated immigration arrival gates, known as auto gates, at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).
In the past, the arrival auto gates were mainly available to Singaporean and Hong Kong passport holders. The system has now been expanded to travelers from 33 foreign nationalities.
However, having an eligible passport does not automatically mean that you can use an arrival auto gate. There are several important conditions. In particular, the arrival auto gates are designed mainly for travelers entering Thailand under the visa-exemption scheme, rather than travelers who already hold a Thai visa.
This guide explains who can use the arrival auto gates, what conditions apply, and why travelers holding Thai visas should normally use a staffed immigration counter.

Travelers from several major countries are not currently included in this arrival auto gate group. These include 🇺🇸 the United States, 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇨🇳 China, 🇹🇼 Taiwan, 🇮🇳 India, and 🇷🇺 Russia.
Passengers holding these passports should continue to use the normal staffed immigration channels when arriving in Thailand.
Having an Eligible Passport Is Not Enough for Using Thailand Arrival Auto Gates
One of the most important points is that the auto gate system does not simply check your nationality.
Even if your passport is from one of the 33 eligible countries or territories, you must also meet the other requirements.
There are four main conditions.
Condition 1: You Must Have Entered Thailand Before
The system requires a previous immigration record using the same passport.
This means that a person visiting Thailand for the first time may not be able to use the arrival auto gate.
First-time visitors may need to go to a staffed immigration counter so that immigration officers can complete the required biometric registration, such as fingerprints and facial information.
If you have renewed your passport, your previous travel history may not necessarily be connected in the same way to your new passport. Therefore, travelers should not assume that a previous visit automatically makes them eligible.
Condition 2: You Must Be Entering Under Visa Exemption
The arrival auto gates are intended for travelers who are entering Thailand without a visa under the visa-exemption scheme.
This is an important difference between a visa-exempt traveler and a person who already has a Thai visa.
If you have a Thai visa, such as a Tourist Visa, Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), Non-Immigrant Visa, or another type of visa, you should use a staffed immigration counter.
An immigration officer can check the visa and record the appropriate permission to stay.
Condition 3: You Must Complete the TDAC
Foreign travelers are required to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before arriving in Thailand.
The TDAC is submitted online and is separate from a visa application.
Completing the TDAC does not itself give you permission to enter Thailand. It is an arrival-registration requirement.
Condition 4: You Need a Biometric Passport
You must have a valid biometric or electronic passport, commonly known as an auto passport.
The passport contains an electronic chip that allows the automated system to check your identity and passport information.
What Happens at Thailand Arrival Auto Gates?
The auto gate uses automated technology to check the traveler’s passport and biometric information.
Instead of waiting for an immigration officer to process the passport manually, the traveler follows the instructions on the automated system.
The system checks the traveler’s information and determines whether the passenger can continue through the automated process.
However, an auto gate does not remove immigration control.
If the system cannot process the passenger or identifies a problem, the traveler can be directed to a staffed immigration counter for further checking.
Therefore, an auto gate should not be understood as a way to avoid immigration inspection.
What About Travelers with Thai Visas?
A common misunderstanding is that an eligible passport automatically allows a traveler to use Thailand arrival auto gates even when the traveler holds a Thai visa.
This is not how the arrival system is designed to work.
Tourist Visa — TR or METV
Travelers entering with a Tourist Visa should use a staffed immigration counter.
The officer needs to check the visa and record the appropriate permission to stay.
Destination Thailand Visa — DTV
DTV holders should also use a staffed immigration counter.
The DTV is a long-term, multiple-entry visa, so the immigration record needs to be processed according to the visa conditions.
Non-Immigrant Visas
Travelers holding Non-Immigrant visas, including categories such as:
- Non-B for business or employment
- Non-ED for education
- Non-O for family or other purposes
- LTR and other long-term categories
should use a staffed immigration counter.
These entries can involve specific visa conditions and permissions to stay that need to be checked by an immigration officer.
Visa on Arrival
Travelers who need a Visa on Arrival (VOA) cannot simply use the arrival auto gate.
They must complete the Visa on Arrival process and then proceed through the appropriate immigration channel.
Re-entry Permits
Travelers returning to Thailand with a re-entry permit should also use a staffed immigration counter.
A re-entry permit is connected to an existing permission to stay in Thailand. Therefore, the immigration record needs to be processed correctly when the traveler returns.
Why Are Visa Holders Re-Directed from Thailand Arrival Auto Gates?
The arrival auto gate system is designed for a specific type of entry.
A visa holder may have information that needs to be checked manually, such as:
- The type of visa;
- The visa validity period;
- The number of permitted entries;
- An existing permission to stay;
- An extension of stay;
- A re-entry permit; or
- Other immigration records.
A staffed immigration officer can check these details and make sure that the correct immigration status is recorded.
For this reason, travelers should not try to use the automated arrival gate simply because their passport nationality is eligible.
The passport nationality is only one part of the eligibility requirements.
Thailand Arrival Auto Gates Do Not Mean “No Immigration Check”
Some travelers may think that an automated gate means that nobody will check their entry.
This is not the case.
The auto gate is still part of Thailand’s immigration control system.
The main difference is that the first stage of the process is performed automatically rather than by an officer.
If the automated system cannot approve the traveler, the passenger may be sent to a staffed counter.
An immigration officer can then ask questions and request supporting documents if necessary.
This is particularly important for travelers who have made many previous trips to Thailand.
What About Frequent Travelers and Border Runs?
Travelers who frequently enter Thailand should not assume that using an auto gate will make their travel history less visible.
Thailand’s immigration system keeps records of previous entries and exits.
If an officer needs to review a traveler’s history, previous trips can be checked regardless of whether earlier entries were processed at an automated gate or a traditional immigration counter.
A traveler who is sent to a staffed counter may be asked about the purpose of the visit and may need to provide supporting evidence.
Depending on the circumstances, an officer may ask for documents such as:
- Proof of accommodation;
- An onward or return ticket;
- Evidence of sufficient funds; or
- Information explaining the purpose of the visit.
The exact documents requested can depend on the individual circumstances and the immigration officer’s assessment.
Thailand Arrival Auto Gates are Not the “Visa Run Shortcut”
The arrival auto gate should not be viewed as a shortcut for maintaining long-term stays in Thailand.
For example, a traveler who has an existing Thai visa, extension of stay, or re-entry permit should not assume that entering through an automated gate will automatically preserve that immigration status.
If you have a specific Thai visa or an existing permission to stay, the safest approach is to use the staffed immigration counter so that your immigration status can be checked and recorded correctly.
This is especially important for people who depend on their entry record for future visa or extension applications.
Physical Passport Stamps

Another difference between automated and manual immigration processing is the way the entry record is provided to the traveler.
The automated system may provide a control slip or electronic record instead of a traditional physical passport stamp.
This can be important for some travelers.
For example, a person may later need to provide evidence of their latest entry when dealing with an immigration office, employer, school, or another organization.
If you specifically require a physical passport stamp or need an immigration officer to check a particular visa or immigration status, it is better to use a staffed counter.
Arrival and Departure Auto Gates Are Different
Travelers should also understand that Thailand’s arrival and departure auto gate systems have different rules.
The restrictions discussed in this article concern the arrival process.
Departure auto gates at Suvarnabhumi have been available to a much wider range of foreign travelers with biometric passports.
Therefore, being able to use an automated gate when leaving Thailand does not necessarily mean that you can use an automated gate when entering Thailand.
This difference is important because the two processes are controlled under different requirements.
What Should Travelers Do at Thailand Arrival Auto Gates?
Before arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport, travelers should check their situation carefully.
You may be able to use the arrival auto gate if:
- Your nationality is included in the eligible group;
- You have previously entered Thailand using the same passport;
- You are entering under the visa-exemption scheme;
- You have completed the TDAC;
- You have a biometric passport; and
- The automated system accepts your entry.
On the other hand, you should use a staffed immigration counter if you are entering Thailand with a Thai visa, re-entry permit, Visa on Arrival, or another immigration status that requires officer processing.
The Main Points to Remember
Thailand’s arrival auto gates can make immigration faster for some eligible travelers, but they are not available to every foreign visitor.
The most important point is that there are two separate questions:
First: Is your passport nationality eligible?
Second: Does your particular type of entry qualify for the automated system?
A traveler may have an eligible passport but still need to use a staffed immigration counter because of their visa or immigration status.
In simple terms:
Eligible passport + previous qualifying entry + visa-exempt entry + TDAC + biometric passport = potentially eligible for using Thailand Arrival Auto Gates.
If you are traveling with a Tourist Visa, DTV, Non-Immigrant Visa, re-entry permit, Visa on Arrival, or another status that requires immigration processing, go directly to a staffed immigration counter.
The auto gate is designed to make eligible visa-exempt arrivals more convenient. It is not a replacement for normal immigration procedures for visa holders or travelers whose entry requires additional verification.
