Phuket Visa Runs: The Tight Controls

Phuket Visa Runs: The Tight Controls – Phuket International Airport (HKT) is not unfriendly, but it is now one of the strictest entry points in Thailand. Petchnumnoi Muay Thai Gym, a Muay Thai school in Kathu, Phuket, said that Phuket increased visa checks to support fairness, safety, and respect for immigration laws. Visa runs are still possible, but people who do them many times or show suspicious travel patterns may face closer checks and possible entry refusal.

While Phuket has become stricter regarding visa runs, it remains one of the world’s most popular destinations, especially for those who want to stay legally using the free visa, the visa exemption, scheme. Here is why Phuket is still a top-tier choice for a long-term free stay.

Many travelers from 93 countries, such as the US, UK, Russia, EU countries, and Australia, receive a 60-day visa-free stamp when they arrive in Thailand. You can extend your stay by visiting the Phuket Immigration Office in Phuket Town or Patong and paying 1,900 THB for a 30-day extension. This means you can stay for 90 days in total without leaving the country. For many travelers, three months is a perfect time to enjoy the island.

Phuket is also a popular place for digital nomads. The island has strong infrastructure for people who work online. Internet speed in areas, such as Bang Tao and Rawai is very fast, often between 300 and 500 Mbps with fiber connection. There are also more than 20 coworking spaces, such as HOMA and Garage Society, which are good for people who stay for one to three months.

Living in Phuket is also good for your budget if you rent monthly. In 2026, renting a one-bedroom condo in areas, such as Kathu or Chalong costs around 18,000 to 25,000 THB per month. Renting a scooter costs about 3,500 to 5,000 THB per month, and long-term rental is cheaper. Food from local restaurants costs around 9,000 to 12,000 THB per month. The visa extension costs 1,900 THB one time in the second month. In total, you need about 34,000 THB (around 950 USD) per month for a comfortable life.

Phuket also has strong international connections. HKT has direct flights to more than 50 international cities. This is very convenient if you need to leave Thailand. You do not need to fly through Bangkok, so you can save about 4,000 to 6,000 THB on domestic flights and more than six hours of travel time.

In early 2026, the time of unlimited Phuket visa runs officially ended. Since late 2025 and into 2026, the Thai Immigration Bureau has officially increased control on visa abuse. Citizens from 93 countries can enter Thailand without a visa for 60 days. However, land entries are now limited to only 2 times per calendar year. Entry by air is still allowed, but it is checked more carefully. Since the crackdown began in late 2025, immigration officers have refused entry to about 2,900 people across Thailand in just one quarter because of visa-run patterns. In the past, entry refusals like this were rare.
